NORTHAMPTON — The city is opening the 42-space parking lot at the former St. Mary’s Church after striking a 50-50 revenue-sharing deal with the Roman Catholic Diocese of Springfield and in time for Northampton’s popular sidewalk sales.
The spots cost 75 cents an hour with a two-hour limit, according to the city’s parking office. The lot is at the busy intersection of State, Elm, Main and Old South streets with its entrance on State Street roughly across from Fly By Night furniture.
Sidewalk Sales run Thursday through Sunday. The lot opens on Wednesday.
Drivers should pay parking fees at the kiosks on State Street or by using the ParkMobile App, the city said. The city’s parking meters and pay-to-park kiosks operate 8 a.m. to 6 p.m. Mondays through Saturdays with parking free on Sundays and holidays.
“With the unexpected shutdown of the Masonic Street Lot, and the long-planned construction in the Round House parking lot, we’re grateful and thrilled to have reached an agreement with the diocese to restore some capacity to the downtown parking system,” Mayor David Narkewicz said in a news release.
Northampton’s agreement with the diocese runs at least through Oct. 15, but could be renewed, the city said. Public works crews mowed and trimmed the vegetation and painted lines on the lot.
St. Mary’s has been closed since a citywide parish merger 11 years ago. The Springfield diocese lists the entire 1.5-acre property for sale with an asking price of $2.9 million.
The sale would include the parking lot, 10,544-square-foot church and 7,288 square-foot former rectory.
