Daytime, weekday delays expected during 71st Street Construction starting Jan. 19 - Boulder Daily Camera

Boulder County Public Works announced 71st Street between Lookout Road and Colo. 52 will be closed weekdays from Jan. 19 through Feb. 9 for a two-phase reconstruction project.

According to a news release, Boulder County Public Works said, “In order to safely replace the Boulder and Whiterock Ditch culvert, 71st Street will need to be closed in both directions between Glacier View Road and Winchester Circle for approximately three weeks starting Tuesday, Jan. 19.” Access to businesses in the Gunbarrel Tech Center off Winchester Circle will still be accessible via Colo. 52 on the north side.

Boulder County Public Works announced 71st Street will shut down between Jan. 19 through Feb. 9, for a two-phased construction project.

The project’s first phase includes:

• Full road closures with associated travel detours
• Single-lane closures
• Merger of the shoulder/bike lane with the main travel lane
• Closures and detours of the Longmont to Boulder (LoBo) Trail
• Sidewalk closures on side streets along 71st street.

Boulder County Public Works spokesman Andrew Barth said construction will take place weekdays between 8 a.m. and 4:30 p.m., and it’s estimated to last four months if weather permits.

In addition to replacing the culvert, the project will also include:

• Drainage improvements
• Intersection improvements at 71st Street and Lookout Road
• A new at-grade, medium-protected crossing of 71st Street for the LoBo Trail and new segments of the trail near the crossing
• Repaving of 71st Street from Lookout Road to just north of Winchester Circle
• New 10-foot wide multiuse path along 71st Street between Lookout Road and Winchester Circle
• Curb and sidewalk improvements on Mount Sherman, Mount Meeker and Glacier View roads
• Improved lighting and bicycle parking along the corridor.

Once the work is complete the area will still require traffic control measures for a time before starting phase two of the project.

Timing for phase two of this two-part project has yet to be determined, according to an email from Barth. “Phase two of the project will take place between Winchester Circle and Colo. 52 and will include a realignment of the 71st Street and Colo. 52 intersection,” he added.
