The city of Lakewood will not issue parking citations for street-sweeping violations for at least the next few weeks due to the latest statewide Stay At Home order, city officials announced Saturday.
The policy change was made “because many people are at home now and can’t easily find off-street places to park,” a city statement said.
Even though the city will not be issuing citations until the more stringent aspects of the Stay at Home order are lifted, the city will still be sweeping streets to ensure they are as clean and sanitary as possible, officials said.
Residents were asked to still attempt to park their vehicles off the street or on their lawn on street-sweeping days if possible.
Parking enforcement will continue for non-street sweeping violations, such as parking in red zones or blocking sidewalks.
Earlier this week, the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department announced that deputies would not enforce street-sweeping parking and expired registration violations in unincorporated areas of the county.
Enforcement will continue for vehicles:
— blocking fire hydrants;
— parking in red zones or fire lanes;
— committing handicap parking violations;
— blocking driveways;
— disrupting the flow of traffic; and— parking at meters in business districts.
Parking enforcement was temporarily paused in the spring due to COVID-19 safer-at-home orders, but resumed on Nov. 15 to keep streets clean and clear as winter storm season approached.
The sheriff’s department decided to temporarily relax enforcement again following Gov. Gavin Newsom’s regional stay-at-home order, which went into effect at 11:59 p.m. on Dec. 6.
