Durham, N.C. — Across the city, people in Durham are noticing the same troubling trend: street racing and car shows going late into the night. Many residents have experienced the same issue. The city's mayor even said this happens on his street.
The situation is making some people concerned about safety, and the noise and risk factor is impacting their quality of life. One resident, William Powell, even said he'd seen drivers firing guns into the air as they raced between stop lights.
"It's not safe," he said.
On Thursday, Powell took his concerns to the City Council meeting. Durham mayor Steve Schewel stressed this is an issue Council and police are taking seriously.
Powell said he's called 911 about 50 times, but the problems persist.
He said this has been going on for at least a year – but in the past few months it has gotten worse.
"It is nearly impossible to sleep between 9 p.m. and 3 a.m. every single weekend," he said.
Shannon Lewis, a resident of south Durham, said she went out driving down Hwy 55 after 11 p.m. one night just to see what these races looked like.
"It was very dangerous. There were sports cars who were passing on the right hand shoulder, driving down the median, making left turns from the far right lane," she said.
The noise is keeping residents awake – as well as young children. Worse still, Powell said he can't tell if the loud pops are gunshots or cars backfiring. It could be either, since Powell said he's seen people "zip through the roads firing guns into the air."
"I've got a four-year-old who just can't sleep," said Powell.
Schewel assured Powell that both he and the Durham police want to put a stop to this.
"All of us are taking it seriously," said Schewel. "The [police] chief and the department are taking it seriously. I very much agree with you that it’s a very serious problem, and we have to get a handle on it.
Some of the racing groups are organized. They have social media accounts. WRAL reached out to try and get their perspectives for this story. WRAL will update the story as more details and perspectives arise.
