JACKSON, MI – Busy streets in Jackson are open to traffic after nearly five months of construction.
West Franklin Street opened on Tuesday, Nov. 17. Construction gave the street new pavement, street parking and improvements to pedestrian access. It also replaced the water main and lead service lines nearby.
The project on the .5-mile stretch of the street cost nearly $1.9 million --about $765,000 paid through the city’s major street fund and the remaining approximately $503,000 coming from a special assessment.
Additionally, a new roundabout in the intersection of S. Martin Luther King Jr. Drive and E. Morrell Street is expected to be complete Friday, Nov. 20, City Spokesman Aaron Dimick said. The .2-mile stretch of street was fully reconstructed on MLK Jr. Drive between E. Mason and E. Morrell streets.
The nearly $2.5-million project replaced the 113-year-old brick sewer and 101-year-old cast iron water main and added new pavement, curbs, sidewalks, driveway approaches, lighting and traffic signals.
