The City of New Orleans and the Regional Transit Authority broke ground on the new Canal Street Ferry Terminal project on Nov. 6.

The nearly $44 million project includes a new 5,000 square foot terminal with an additional 5,000 square feet of covered area,  canopies for rain cover over new gangways, and a floating dock for embarkation. Check out the renderings here.

The team includes Woodward Design+Build and APC Construction as the general contractors, Infinity Engineering Consultants and Cambridge Seven Associates as the architects, and ship manufacturer Metal Shark as the builder of the two new ferry vessels, which will replace the existing 40 year old ferries.

Funding came from a variety of sources, including $24 million from the Federal Transit Administration, $2 million from the Louisiana Department of Transportation and Development, $12 million from the City of New Orleans and $5 million from the RTA.

The new terminal is part of the overall new riverfront plan, which also includes the $500 million Four Seasons and new $7.5 million renovation of to Spanish Plaza.
