Restaurants in Seattle’s Queen Anne and Capitol Hill Join Restaurant-Related Street Closures - Eater Seattle

More Seattle Blocks Join Latest Restaurant-Related Street Closures

Following the city’s new initiative to help small businesses expand open-air retail spaces during the COVID-19 pandemic, a handful of streets have been blocked off for restaurant seating — and the effort now seems to be expanding quickly. Queen Anne’s family-friendly restaurant Eden Hill Provisions recently closed off a portion of W Crockett Street for more seating (it’ll cede the space to the neighborhood farmers market on Thursdays). In addition, 11th Ave south of Pike Street is about to join the party, with nearby Cafe Pettirosso and Chophouse Row’s lauded French restaurant Marmite creating an outdoor plaza after receiving approval for a permit. This follows the closure of Broadway Court outside Optimism Brewing and E Harrison near Ethan Stowell’s Rione XIII. Meanwhile, Columbia City (on Ferdinand Street) and Pioneer Square (Occidental Ave from S Main to S Jackson) also have new plazas meant to be shared by local retail businesses.

Seattle Times Critics Opt Out of Dining In

Speaking of COVID-19 adjustments, Seattle Times food critics Bethany Jean Clement and Tan Vinh recently discussed their approach to covering the restaurant scene during the pandemic. And the conclusion was dining in just doesn’t feel right at the moment. This echoes what other restaurant critics across the country have said (Eater recently hosted a panel about the ethics of dining in as well). But, as Seattle businesses continue to gradually reopen during phase two in the state’s “Safe Start” plan, the article marks a strong statement that the lens by which local restaurants are assessed will be significantly altered for the foreseeable future. Both critics recommend diners stick to takeout, tip generously, and manage expectations for certain offerings. “A short menu shouldn’t be looked at derisively; doing less makes it easier to do it better,” wrote Clement.

John Howie Steak Debuts New Delivery Service

While many steakhouses in Seattle have adjusted to takeout offerings, delivery is a little rarer. Now, Bellevue’s upscale John Howie Steak is giving it a shot with a new “Door to Door” service. According to the restaurant (known for high-end cuts of meat), delivery for the full menu will be available within a five-mile radius, and will be carried out by staff equipped with mobile cooling and heating storage systems. There will also be amuse-bouche and house made chocolates, compliments of the chef, to mimic the in-person dining experience. To this point, John Howie has offered curbside pickup, as well as limited indoor and outdoor dining.
