Hope hasn't popped. Local celebrity 57th Street corn is revived after uprooting. - Argus Leader

The 57th Street corn is alive!

While the resilient corn, grown from a crack in the sidewalk along 57th Street and Minnesota Avenue, was uprooted by an unknown culprit earlier this week, a Sioux Falls resident saved the corn from drying out on the concrete Wednesday morning.

Chad Theisen, a Sioux Falls realtor, drove with his children to the southern Sioux Falls intersection around 10 a.m. Wednesday. A sign reading "CORN RIP" was attached to a traffic post above the abandoned stalk on the side of the road. But Theisen picked up the discarded corn and placed it in the back of his vehicle.

Theisen, who grew up on a farm north of Sioux Falls, called several farmers and "corn experts" to get their opinion on how to revive the unofficial Sioux Falls mascot.

"A local corn-loving crew was quickly dispatched to the scene of the crime and efforts to save the patient began," Theisen shared on a Facebook post, which quickly went viral on Wednesday.

This is just the beginning of the 57th Street corn's story, Theisen said.

The celebrity stalk is also planning to make its first appearance at a downtown Sioux Falls event Wednesday night. If Theisen's attempt at revival proves successful, he hopes to permanently replant the corn in a public (yet safe) space with the help of the city.

To save the corn, his family bought a five-gallon bucket from Ace Hardware, bought Miracle Gro and used some soil from their backyard garden to accommodate the fragile corn stalk. They're watering it well and keeping it out of direct sunlight for long periods of time, so as not to shock the uprooted plant's system, Theisen said.

And they named the 57th Street corn.

After filing through a list of names people christened the corn on the curb over the week — including Curby and Maizie — the family settled on their favorite.

Sioux Falls, meet Cornelia.

They even named her ear of corn... Cob.

As Cornelia grows strong again, Theisen wants to hear ideas on where to plant Cornelia. Some ideas he's thought of include McKennan Park, the Outdoor Campus, or inside a government building with plenty of natural light.

It's important to him that Cornelia's story continues, because her story is eareplaceable. It's one of hope, resilience and joy — something Sioux Falls residents can use right now, he said.

"I didn't want her story to end like that," Theisen said. "2020's been a very hard year for a lot of people. People see the hope, the encouragement that Cornelia represents, and she represents the good in people."

The springy stalk made Theisen smile and chuckle whenever he thought about it standing along the street.

"For me, it represents growing where you're planted," he said. "Even if you're placed by what appears to be accident, you can still grow and have the ability to overcome adversity. And, ultimately, hope will arise. Even if it's a busy intersection in a crack in the sidewalk, hope will arise."

After transplanting Cornelia in the bucket, he and his children took her on a tour of Sioux Falls — a whole new view beyond the bustle of cars and clanking of construction where she'd been rooted her whole life. They visited Falls Park, downtown locations and a "family reunion" at a cornfield near Sioux Falls.

Cornelia will make her first public appearance as a local celebrity at the TedxSiouxFalls event Wednesday night at the Washington Pavilion.

If people or children want to reach out to Cornelia, they can send cards or words of encouragement to the Keller Williams office at 6300 S. Connie Avenue in Sioux Falls, South Dakota 57108.

"There's always hope for us," Theisen said. "And Cornelia."
