Syracuse, N.Y. -- The Syracuse police department is investigating a number of shots fired incidents that took place on Sunday night, including one near Washington Square Park that left a 24-year-old man dead.
The man was shot in the back around 6 p.m. on Sunday afternoon and later pronounced dead at SUNY Upstate Medical Hospital. The incident also left a 55-year-old woman wounded. The Syracuse Police Department said she was shot in the leg and expected to survive.

Syracuse Police Department Public Information Officer Sgt. Matt Malinowski said in an e-mail that the shots that wounded the pair occurred in Washington Square Park and the intersection of Wolf Street and Park Street
The police used yellow police tape to block off Wolf Street, Park Street and North Salina Street after the shooting took place, spending hours there early Sunday evening marking evidence and interviewing people in the neighborhood.
Later in the evening, police were called to the intersection of Martin Luther King East and South Salina Street for another shots fired call. According to information mentioned on Syracuse’s police scanner, the city’s ShotSpotter technology reported 17 gun shots in the incident. About 15 minutes later, police had placed at least 17 yellow markers in the middle of the road on Martin Luther King East.

“You can count them yourself,” said an on-looker, to the effort, when asked about the extent of the shooting.
Hours after that shooting, Martin Luther King Boulevard East remained blocked by yellow police tape, along with portions of the parking lot in the nearby Blue Star gas station, where all the lights were off except for a neon open sign in the window.
