Watkins Glen has created a temporary, pedestrian-only space on Third Street.
“This change will create a pedestrian-friendly ‘Village Square,’” Watkins Glen Mayor Luke Leszyk said. “We are excited and believe it will provide an inviting environment while helping our restaurants and retailers by creating additional space in which to operate safely.”
Picnic tables have been set up in the first block of Third Street, from Franklin Street to the alley for enjoying take-out meals from nearby restaurants.
Third Street, normally a one-way street east, will be open to two-way traffic from Decatur Street west to the municipal parking lot.
“Many municipalities have taken similar steps and seen great results,” said Rebekah Carroll, executive director of the Watkins Glen Area Chamber of Commerce, in a news release. “Watkins Glen is already walk-able and naturally beautiful. Now, we’ll have a park-like setting on Third Street that will help businesses and offer something new to shoppers and diners.”

New York's new boating safety certificate law in effect
Getting out on the lakes is a good antidote to pandemic cabin fever, but America's Boating Club – Finger Lakes Chapter, ABC-FLX, reminds boaters that the state's new safety certificate law is now in effect.
With the start of this year, motorboat operators born after Jan. 1, 1993, are required to earn a boating safety certificate. The same will apply to older boaters as requirements are phased in over the next several years. By 2025, everyone, regardless of age, must have a state safety certificate to operate a motor boat.
ABC-FLX, based in Watkins Glen, has for many years offered a classroom course to obtain the boating certificate. However, due to the coronavirus pandemic, the classroom courses have been suspended.
Boaters may still take the course online from America's Boating Club.
For more information about America's Boating Course, the safety certificate course, go to the Education page on the ABC-FLX website at abc-flx.org. In addition to the safety certificate course, a wide variety of learn-on-your-own courses, webinars and videos are offered.

Catholic Charities of Chemung/Schuyler names new leaders
Catholic Charities of Chemung and Schuyler has announced the appointment of Nancy Koons as the organization’s new executive director and of Ashley Kerrick as director of Schuyler County Services.
Koons was executive director of The Catholic Foundation of Oklahoma in Oklahoma City. Prior to that, she served as executive director of Catholic Charities of the Texas Panhandle, overseeing programs focused on refugee resettlement, immigration services, emergency shelters, hunger initiatives and affordable housing.
“I am looking forward to working with the incredible Catholic Charities’ staff, as well as meeting all those who support this critical work in the community,” Koons said in a news release. “Having worked for the Catholic Church for over 30 years, I am delighted to be back in a Catholic Charities agency, working with staff, donors and volunteers to further the mission of providing help and creating hope in Chemung and Schuyler counties.”
Kerrick has been in human services work for 14 years, in a range of capacities from schools to inpatient psychiatric care. Kerrick has been with Catholic Charities for seven years and held several positions during that time, including as a housing case manager, street outreach worker and shelter supervisor.
“To have the opportunity to lead in an organization that is so instrumental in meeting the needs of the community is an honor. I am eager to bring a fresh perspective to a place where I’ve felt such a strong sense of community already,” Kerrick said.
