Portions of Montebello’s busiest street will be repaved soon - The San Gabriel Valley Tribune

Repaving of portions of Montebello’s busiest street, Beverly Boulevard, will begin in about two months.

It was one of two contracts worth nearly $2 million the Montebello City Council awarded last week to repave about 1.3 miles of streets.

“This is very important,” Councilman Jack Hadjinian said of the Beverly contract. “It’s one of our major thoroughfares in the city. Portions of the street are in bad shape.”

On an average day, more than 33,000 vehicles travel Beverly, which also serves as a cut-through street for those avoiding the 60 Freeway, Public Works Director Danilo Batson said.

Several years ago, the boulevard was repaved from Garfield Avenue to Hay Street, Batson said. Plans also are under way to redo the street from Findlay Avenue to the eastern city limit.

Workers don’t tackle Beverly all at once because the city doesn’t have the funds for such a large project, he said.

In addition to the nearly $739,951 contract awarded to Irwindale-based Gentry Brothers to repave Beverly from 21st Street to Howard Avenue, the council also awarded a $984,215 contract to Sequel Contractors of Santa Fe Springs for repaving of Arroyo Drive from Astra Drive to Rose Glen Avenue.

Arroyo, a collector street, has an average traffic count of about 4,255 vehicles a day, Batson said. Like Beverly, it’s in bad shape.

“There are lots of cracks, especially between Astra and Paramount Boulevard,” he said. That project also includes adding sidewalks between Astra and Paramount, Batson said.

Work on both is expected to take 45 to 60 days, he said, and should begin in about two months. There will be no complete street closures, but one lane or one side may be closed at times, he said.

City officials also plan to repair many residential streets by using 20 years of Los Angeles County sales tax money the city gets annually to issue a bond, ranging from 18 million to $20 million. During the course of three years, that money could pay for an estimated 92 segments of mostly residential streets throughout the city, officials say.
