Main Street westbound through Hamilton to be closed this week - Hamilton Journal News

The business corridor would have been repaired this week, but Main Street shops asked the city to delay the work so it wouldn’t harm business during the shopping days before Valentine’s Day, on Friday.

A city resident showed up Wednesday at the Hamilton City Council complained that the temporarily patched-up street was causing problems for vehicles and wondered why the problem existed.

Officials explained they also were disappointed the newly paved street had to be disrupted, but they had no choice after water leaked into city-owned natural-gas mains, disrupting power to some customers, including businesses, between the night of Jan. 16 and the morning of Jan. 20.

Executive Director of Infrastructure Jim Logan, who oversees Hamilton’s utilities, said at the time that “cold-patch” repairs were applied as a temporary fix, with more permanent repairs to follow.

“We originally had it scheduled for this week,” Hamilton’s director of engineering, Rich Engle, said after Wednesday’s council meeting, “and the Main Street businesses contacted us and said, ‘Can you please shift it to next week? It would help us out a lot,’ and so we did.”

Repairs to Park Avenue, which will be the primary detour route and which also was cut into, already have been made.

“Since it wasn’t an emergency, truly urgent matter, we talked to the contractor, and they agreed,” Engle said about RLA Utilities, which helped with the repairs to the gas system. “We had a meeting with them and told them exactly how we wanted the material removed, and what was to be put back in its place to make sure it’s done as well as we can, for a repair like that,” Engle said.

“We just paved Main Street, too, and it irritates me,” Engle said. On the other hand, the city had no alternative in making repairs to the gas system and a water main that was leaking, creating the situation.

Lisa Macy, who works at lahVdah at 408 Main St., said that for the store that produces its own skin care, soaps, candles and other items, either week would have been OK, because business is consistent no matter which week.

“I’ll be honest with you: We’re busy regardless of whether there’s a holiday or not, because the need is always out there,” Macy said.

The store regularly has “flash sales” through the year that attract customers, she said. “So we have traffic on a daily basis, regardless if there’s a holiday or not.”

On Thursday, she put together a custom package of gifts a man requested for his wife and daughter, and there have been similar orders. “And we already have some Valentine’s gifts put together that they can just grab and go with.”
