Bates Street Society dinner celebrates Pillars of Vibrancy - Hometown Life

It was a night of celebration as The Community House of Birmingham gave recognition to Pillars of Vibrancy and major donors.

“The Pillars are extraordinary individuals who have demonstrated selfless service and philanthropy toward others out of a genuine and deep desire to help and be of service to others,” explained William Seklar, president and CEO of TCH.

The 280 guests set a record for the largest group ever to dine at TCH. Huel Perkins, award winning and popular Fox 2 Detroit news anchor, was host for the event.

“This is a marvelous celebration of the spirit of the community," he said. "The awardees are not only successful in their public lives, but are men and women who have gone above and beyond so the less fortunate can have a chance to succeed.”

Perkins' cordial manner provided humor and kind descriptions of the honorees.

Julie Dawson, local artist, author and world traveler is a previous recipient of the Pillar of Vibrance award. She says, “There is so much dedication in this group of people… so many skills to make positive changes in our community. This is a fine group of community leaders.”

Ever since its founding in 1923, TCH has relied upon community members to provide leadership and support. As a non-profit organization TCH receives no funds from tax dollars.

“We are now looking back on all of the individuals, corporations and foundations whose kindnesses large and small have made a true and lasting difference at TCH,” said Seklar. “We are open 364 days a year and tonight we step back and praise the angels in our midst.

Robust philanthropy helps us support a wide range of programs, projects, and services that benefit the community. It also helps protect and preserve The Community House and its historic building.”

After the delicious dinner featuring crab cakes and beef tenderloin prepared by chef Ruben Fleming, Perkins began introducing the Pillars of Vibrancy with descriptions of their fine services to the community. Each recipient gave a brief acceptance speech. Winners included the following persons:

Each of the award recipients gave a two minute acceptance speech showing appreciation for their recognition and thanking their supporters. Hannan Lis made comments about how nice it is to note and celebrate the good news of positive community involvement in this divisive time.

The guests also reflected upon the good news of the Birmingham community which is truly fortunate to have so many dedicated volunteers willing to give of their time, talents, and fortunes to maintain positive impacts upon the citizens, the programs and the climate of our home town area.
