Main Street in Louisville began the process of opening back up to vehicular traffic on Monday after being closed to cars and buses since late April in support of the city’s outdoor dining program.
The Louisville City Council approved the road closure on April 6, and the program — in its second year of existence — kicked off nearly three weeks later. Main Street is expected to be fully open by the end of business on Friday, with RTD buses resuming normal routes next Monday.
The outdoor dining program allowed restaurants to remain open during the restrictions put in place in response to the COVID-19 pandemic. Extra outdoor seating on Main Street ensured that proper social distancing was maintained and helped bolster small businesses during the warmer months this past year.
Now, as COVID restrictions are loosening, temperatures are dropping and restaurants are welcoming back indoor diners, the City of Louisville has decided to end the program and open the street back up to normal traffic.
Though cars will be allowed on the street again, several establishments have decided to keep outdoor seating options on street parking spaces for the winter season. These restaurants include Verde, Moxie Bread Company, Por Wine House, The Empire, 12 Degree Brewing, BOB’s Diner, Bittersweet Café & Confections, Giovannitti Coffee and The Waterloo, although this list is subject to change as Main Street works to reopen.
The Louisville outdoor dining program was a success, according to Economic Vitality Director Megan Pierce. However, in lieu of a complete closure of Main Street in April 2022, the City of Louisville is planning on going back to it’s annual patio parklet program.
“The patio program was suspended in 2020 and 2021 to allow for more expanded outdoor dining options, but we do plan to return to this setup next year,” Pierce said.
