Water, street improvements coming to Muskegon Heights - mlive.com

MUSKEGON HEIGHTS, MI – Neighborhood streets in Muskegon Heights will get needed repairs next year as part of the city’s work to replace lead water lines.

The city council recently agreed to sell $16 million in bonds to fund water system improvements that will require streets to be dug up and repaved.

The city, like others in the state, is obligated to replace 5 percent of residential lead water service lines per year. Muskegon Heights has 3,500 residences, Muskegon Heights City Manager Troy Bell told MLive.

In addition, other water pipes need to be replaced, which will help increase water pressure – including fire hydrant pressure, Bell said.

As it plans those replacements, the city is looking at roads that also need fixing, he said

“We’re dealing with 50-year-old pipes, and at some point the whole system needs to be replaced,” Bell said. “But we can’t dig up the whole system at once and replace it. What we’re trying to do is focus on the areas that have the worst (water) service and the worst roads.”

Water pipe and service line replacements, along with road repaving, are expected to get started next spring, Bell said.

Areas that are among the first to be addressed include:

  • Seventh Street between Oakwood and Summit avenues.
  • Summit Avenue between Seventh and Eighth streets.
  • Rotterdam Avenue between Highland and Sixth Street.
  • Eighth Street between Oakwood and Summit.
  • Rotterdam between Eighth and Ninth streets.

The city also will be putting in new piping at its water filtration plant to allow for use of lower-volume pumps, Bell said. The plant is designed to pump 26 million gallons of water per day, but only needs about 3 million, he said.

The new pipes and pumps will provide more efficiency at lower cost, he said.

These initial projects likely will use about half of the $16 million in bond proceeds, Bell said.
