PEORIA (Heart of Illinois ABC) -- Police are still searching for a white sedan that left the scene of a Saturday night crash that seriously injured three.
Three people were hospitalized due to the crash, including one with life-threatening injuries. The crash stemmed from street racing, something Peoria Police Captain Scott Cook says can't continue.
"It happens a lot more often than it should," Cook said.
Cook says speeding enforcement and raising awareness can help buck the street racing trend. But the community is approaching the one-year anniversary of another street racing crash in September 2020 that killed four young women.
"There are now four lives lost… due to something that only takes a matter of seconds to become involved in," Cook said. "People really need to stop and think before they get behind the wheel."
Diamond Williams is one of the four girls who died in that fatal crash. Last month, her mother Margaret Williams told us no-one else should have to deal with that grief.
"It was a big thing around Peoria," Williams said. "But all the drag racing, all the street racing needs to stop."
Jerome Polnitz recently pleased guilty to one count of aggravated street racing in that case. Captain Cook says if you ever see a street race in progress, do not interact with them, and call 911.
"Someone should try to avoid that situation, so get out of the way as best you can," Cook said. "Pulling over is probably a decent idea. It all depends on the circumstances."
Last weekend's crash did end with Darien Davis facing reckless driving and street racing charges. But police say he wasn't alone. They are still searching for a white sedan.
If you have any information, Peoria Police ask you call Officer Jared Moore at 309-494-8487.
