Longmont will begin applying chip seal treatment to selected roadways starting Tuesday through the week of Sept. 13, city officials announced in a Thursday news release.
Chip sealing work consists of applying asphalt to a road surface followed by a layer of aggregate chips, essentially creating a new road surface. Officials said during work there may be instances in which motorists will encounter loose aggregate chip material Drivers should drive slowly and cautiously during this interim phase.
Following chip application, loose chips are removed and a sealant is applied. This work is followed by roadway striping. The chip seal process does not require closing affected streets, but there will be temporary delays during construction. Access to residences and businesses will remain open.
Streets scheduled for chip seal treatment:
- 21st Avenue between Horizon Parkway and Hover Street
- Ninth Avenue between Hover and Coffman streets
- Crystal Place from Alpine Street to the cul-de-sac
- Gillette Court from Mayfield Lane to the cul-de-sac

Officials said in their release that while Longmont “strives to complete all projects on-time, work is weather-dependent and there may be delays due to rain or other unfavorable working conditions.”
In informational materials and a notification letter being distributed to residents and businesses along the streets to be chip sealed, city staff said “No parking” signs or construction cones or barricades will be put in place at least 48 hours prior to work. Access to residences and businesses will remain open, and Longmont’s residential trash service collection schedule will remain unchanged during work.
