Fortuna firefighters dedicate street to honor district commissioner - Eureka Times-Standard

Family, friends, community members, and firefighting personnel from throughout the Eel River Valley gathered July 21 at the Fortuna Volunteer Fire Department for two dedications.

Recognition was given for the recently installed Eel River Valley fire training facility behind the main Fortuna fire station at 320 S. Fortuna Boulevard, and a ribbon-cutting was held to dedicate Nicholson Way, the new access road from the facility to Newburg Road.

Nicholson Way is named in honor of the late Fortuna Fire Protection District Commissioner Dave Nicholson. Nicholson who died earlier this year on April 24 at the age of 67. Nicholson served as a firefighter, Captain of Company 1, and as assistant chief of the fire department. He was serving as Fortuna Fire Protection District Board Chair when he died.

Nicholson was also actively involved in the community as a member of the Fortuna Rodeo Association and for many years was Santa Claus for Eel River Valley families and groups, to name just a few of his activities.

Fortuna Fire Protection District Commissioner Robert Johnson said, “It was an honor and a privilege to serve with Dave. He gave his time tirelessly to our community. It is a true pleasure and honor to dedicate this street to our friend and fire commissioner Dave Nicholson.”

Fortuna Mayor Sue Long said of the late Nicholson, “There is a big hole in our community and in our hearts. We remember him tonight, remember the great person that he was.”

Nicholson’s widow Cheryl addressed those who gathered for the dedications saying,

“Thank you to the Fortuna Fire District for dedicating this road to him, Dave loved this stuff. Remember him when you see his name,” she said. “We are all so lucky to live here and I am so lucky to have you all supporting me through this.”

Regarding the new fire training facility, Johnson said “This training tower is a major boost to the training program and will be an asset for all (agencies) in the Eel River Valley.”

The new facility will be available for use by all Eel River Valley and other Humboldt County fire and law enforcement agencies. It will also be utilized by students participating in the annual Eel River Valley Fire Academy and the fire academy at College of the Redwoods.

“Fortuna is the training hub of the Eel River Valley,” said Fortuna Volunteer Fire Department Assistant Chief Rus Brown.

“This new facility will really step up our game,” he added, referring to the training opportunities. “I’m really glad we got this tower, but I wish I were standing here with Dave (Nicholson) talking about it.”

Refreshments for those attending the two dedications were provided by the Fortuna Fire Ladies Auxiliary.
