Downtown Ann Arbor street closures to continue through Nov. 1 - MLive.com

ANN ARBOR, MI -- Weekend street closures for restaurants will continue until Nov. 1, Ann Arbor City Council decided at its regular meeting Monday, Aug. 16.

Street closures have been allowed downtown since March 15 to allow businesses and restaurants room to spread out to reduce the spread of coronavirus. The closure was set to expire on Aug. 30.

“The downtown block closures have been really successful in bringing people downtown and providing space,” said Sandra Andrade, the executive director for the Main Street Area Association.

The newest rendition of the resolution changes the footprint of the closures after the State Street Merchants Association said it no longer wants to participate in the closures.

The State Street association’s decision to remove itself was prompted by complaints from businesses in Nickels Arcade, according to Frances Todoro-Hargreaves, the executive director of the State Street Merchants Association.

Businesses in Nickels Arcade said the street closures were hurting their sales and that “their customers could not get to their business,” said Todoro-Hargreaves. The association’s decision was also prompted by the fact that many businesses were not able to participate in the street closure because of staffing issues.

This decision removes State Street, Maynard Street and part of East Liberty Street from the closures.

The closures that remain are:

  • Main Street from William Street to Washington Street
  • West Liberty Street from Ashley Street to Main Street
  • East Liberty Street from Main Street to Fourth Street
  • West Washington Street from Ashley Street to Main Street

The extension also moved the start time for the closure up an hour. Closures will now start at 3 p.m. on Thursday rather than 4 p.m.

Andrade said the change makes setting up the closures easier.

The council also passed a resolution that will allow for a “social district” in downtown Ann Arbor. The resolution, if approved by the Michigan Liquor Control Commission, would allow people to walk in the area with open liquor containers.

Although the social district does overlap with street closures, it would be in effect even outside of times with closed streets.

The social district will be in effect from 4 p.m. to 11 p.m. every week on Thursday, Friday, Saturday and Sunday. The streets that will be designated as part of the district are:

  • Main Street from William Street to Huron Street
  • Fourth Avenue from William to Huron
  • Washington Street from Ashley Street to Fifth Avenue
  • Liberty Street from Ashley Street to Fifth Avenue
  • Ashley Street from Liberty Street to Washington Street

Andrade said the association still has “a lot of steps to take” to create the district, but that they are “really excited.

More than 70 communities across the state have created similar social districts.

“It’s basically something in the toolkit to relieve the economic impact,” Andrade said.

The city council also passed street closures for the A2 Artoberfest from Oct. 28 through Oct. 10 and the 20th Annual Mayor’s Green Fair on Oct. 1 from 3 to 11 p.m.
