Ann Arbor OKs street closures for 7 University of Michigan football games - MLive.com

ANN ARBOR, MI — Anticipating the return of University of Michigan football, and the crowds that come with it, Ann Arbor has OK’d a plan for game-day street closures.

City Council this week OK’d the university’s request to close parts of Main Street and Keech Avenue by Michigan Stadium for the following seven Saturday home football games:

  • Sept. 4 — noon game against Western Michigan
  • Sept. 11 — 8 p.m. game against Washington
  • Sept. 18 — noon game against Northern Illinois
  • Sept. 25 — 3:30 p.m. homecoming game against Rutgers
  • Oct. 23 — against Northwestern, time TBD
  • Nov. 6 — against Indiana, time TBD
  • Nov. 27 — noon game against Ohio State

Similar to years past, a vehicle-free zone will be created by closing Keech between Main and Greene streets, limiting access to parking permit holders on Greene Street from Hoover to Keech, closing the westbound right-turn lane on East Stadium Boulevard onto Main just south of the Big House, and closing Main from Stadium Boulevard to Pauline Boulevard.

The closures will start three hours before each game and last until the end of the game, with the exception of southbound Main Street, which will be closed starting one hour before.

UM has worked with the U.S. Department of Homeland Security, Ann Arbor Police Department and other local law enforcement officials over the years to enhance security at Michigan Stadium and for residents in adjacent neighborhoods by creating the vehicle-free zone, Debra Williams, the city’s special events coordinator, told council in a memo.

Vehicle access from neighborhood streets onto the closed area of Main will be either prohibited or restricted at police-controlled access points, depending on the street, to accommodate people needing ingress or egress to properties fronting Main that have no side-street access, Williams said. The closed portion of those streets will remain available for pedestrian use and emergency vehicle response to the area, she said.

In addition to the seven home games on the schedule, the Wolverines have five away games this fall at Wisconsin, Nebraska, Michigan State, Penn State and Maryland.
