FORT WAYNE, Ind. (Fort Wayne's NBC) - Hundreds of people converged on downtown Sunday night to see a holiday tradition of exploding fireworks.
What they didn't expect is that they would see them coming from a flaming car stopped in the middle of the street.
Flames shot up and sounds of fireworks popping came from the vehicle, all while fireworks were shooting high into the air above the Indiana Michigan Power building a few blocks away.
Several people took video of the fire on their smartphones and posted it to social media sites.
At times you can hear popping sounds in the recordings.
Fort Wayne Deputy Fire Chief Adam O'Connor says passengers in the car escaped without serious injury.
When you look at the size of the flames and think about those explosions, it was a fortunate outcome.
O'Connor says there were fireworks in the passenger compartment of the vehicle.
Why they ignited is not clear.
"It was like you had fireworks downtown, but you also had fireworks on Main Street with that car and the fireworks on the car just turned in to one heck of a hot fire," said Scott Dent, who was watching the city fireworks display when the other situation unfolded.
"I don't know how much fireworks it was, but it seemed like it had to be plenty for it to do what it did and caught on fire that big," said Teresa Mason, who was also an eyewitness.
Deputy Chief O'Connor says there is a lesson to be learned from the car fire.
He says if you're carrying fireworks in a vehicle, put them in the trunk, so there is less chance they will inadvertently ignite and cause so much risk to life and limb.
