LOGAN SQUARE — One of the biggest community yard sales in Logan Square is back this weekend.
The Bernard Street sale, a long-held neighborhood tradition, is set for 9 a.m.-3 p.m. Saturday. About a dozen families will be selling everything from kids toys to electronics in the 2400 and 2500 blocks of North Bernard Street.
Last year’s event was canceled due to the pandemic. The event this year was initially scheduled for last month, but had to be postponed because of bad weather.
Tim Knuth, a resident of the block for nearly 30 years, couldn’t say when the sale started but it was already a tradition when he moved to the street. This year’s sale will be smaller than previous years because of the postponement, Knuth said, but it is still expected to be a big draw.
“We seem to get very good traffic,” Knuth said. “With the pandemic, I suspect a lot of people purged a lot of junk this year and are ready to sell.”
In addition to the yard sale, Bernard Street residents go all out for Halloween each year. The street has become one of the city’s hottest destinations for trick-or-treating.
“My mom jokes that we live in Mayberry,” Knuth said. “She’s amazed that in a city the size of Chicago that you can have a street full of people who look out for each other’s kids and each other’s pets. We’ve got a listserv for the street — people borrow tools, people take care of each other’s mail and packages, trade plants with each other. It’s a lovely sense of community.”
