ANN ARBOR, MI — Ann Arbor officials are reporting another sewage spill on Main Street.
The city discovered the spill Thursday afternoon when responding to a complaint of running water from a manhole cover near the intersection of Jefferson and Main streets, the city stated in a news release Friday, July 2.
“Upon inspection, it was found that the overflow was being caused by a blockage in the pipe due to a contractor conducting lining work,” the news release stated. “An estimated 60 gallons of sewage was released onto the road surface, flowing into the storm drain, and ultimately finding its way to the Huron River, via Allen Creek, underground.”
Roseville-based Lanzo Construction is the city’s contractor for a months-long sewer-lining project now winding down.
The city blamed Lanzo for two previous sewage spills during the sewer-lining project this year.
In March, the city estimated 50 gallons of sewage spilled onto Main Street near Madison Street when the contractor’s sewer bypass pumping operation failed, with sewage making its way into a storm drain and ultimately the Huron River.
In a bigger incident in February, the city estimated 10,000 gallons of sewage spilled onto Main Street, ultimately making its way to the river.
A Lanzo representative said Friday the company was not responsible for the latest spill, but it was responsible for the others. The representative cited a “failed sewer line” and recent heavy rains as causes of this week’s incident, but declined further comment.
