A respected bishop in Deer Park just received a lasting honor in the community.
Bishop Winfred J. Pippen of the First Baptist Church of Deer Park passed away in October at the age of 76. In celebration of his legacy, a section of Washington Avenue in Deer Park is now named “Bishop Winfred J. Pippen Memorial Way.”
The section of Washington Avenue that was renamed, between Sammis Avenue and Tell Avenue, is where the First Baptist Church of Deer Park is located.
The Town of Babylon held a street renaming ceremony this week.
Pippen previously served as an ordained minister of the Greater Second Baptist Church of Freeport. He also founded and was the president of the All Christian Bible College (ACBC) and the First Baptist Bible Institute (FBBI).
Out of the 82 preachers of the First Baptist Church of Deer Park, 80 percent of them were licensed by Pippen.
He was a lifelong member of the local chapter of the NAACP.
Town of Babylon Supervisor Rich Schaffer, Councilman DuWayne Gregory, Suffolk County Legislator Tom Donnelly, TJ Hatter of New York State Attorney General Letitia James’s office, and representatives from the Deer Park Fire Department joined the Pippen family in the unveiling of this tribute.
