South Street will be closed to westbound traffic for the “next several weeks,” between 7 pm and 5 am, starting today, Monday, May 24, 2021, to accommodate a water main replacement by the Southeast Morris County Municipal Utilities Authority, Morristown police advised.
Westbound traffic will be detoured during these hours to Pine Street, Dumont Place, and then to Route 202 at the Morristown Green, police said.
Parking will be prohibited on the westbound side (even numbers) of South Street to accommodate the work zone.
Eastbound traffic and parking will remain as normal during the project, but police urged motorists and pedestrians to exercise caution when traveling in this area.
The Morristown project calls for replacement of approximately 6,200 linear feet of aging iron water pipes and 96 valves, along portions of South-, Washington-, Rowe- and George streets.
Nineteen fire hydrants also will be replaced, along with old water meters, according to the water utility.
