Barricades blocking vehicle access to a portion of State Street in Albany have been removed, as has fencing around much of the state Capitol building, after being placed there more than five months ago following the Jan. 6 riot at the U.S. Capitol.
"The barricades were removed from State Street on Sunday morning," said State Police spokesman Beau Duffy. "We conduct periodic security assessments for the Capitol and following the most recent assessment, it was determined that the closed section of State Street could be reopened."
On Tuesday morning, food trucks and cars were once again parked on the street, which is home to several key state government buildings in addition to the Capitol, including the Justice Building and the Legislative Office Building.
The barricades that had been positioned at either end of the block had been placed on the sidewalk. Fencing still remains at portions of the building, including in front of staircases.
State officials moved to close off a portion of the street after the riot over concerns raised by federal law enforcement after the Jan. 6 riot in Washington that statehouses around the country could be targets for attacks or demonstrations.
The state Capitol building itself has been closed to the public since last March in order to stem the spread of the COVID-19 pandemic. The Office of General Services this month, in a letter to Republican state lawmakers, indicated a reopening plan for the building was in development.
