Anyone driving down Church Street has noticed the construction taking place at the intersection of First Street. The entire parking lot behind the Tremont Hotel has been torn up and a small wall has been built on the southwest corner.
Marshalltown Public Works Director Justin Nickel said a $981,000 updated parking lot is under construction. The wall is to help with the slight angle the previous parking lot dealt with.
“It lifts the elevation by a couple feet,” Nickel said. “So that is why that is being built.”
This parking lot will be unlike all others throughout Marshalltown. Nickel said this lot has pervious pavers, otherwise known as porous concrete. The pervious pavers will aid a lot in cleaning rain water.
“The rain will soak into the concrete and it will help clean it,” he said.
Water is stored in a space below the surface and is then filtered back into the soil. It is because of this feature the city was able to utilize state program grant money.
“The water quality aspect was the main driver of this project,” Nickel said.
The type of concrete will not be the only new feature of the First and Church parking lot.
“Before, the parking lot was 100 percent asphalt. Now there’s going to be trees and planters, some grassy medians,” he said.
The city has no plans to build additional pervious pavers parking lots elsewhere at this time.
“We would have to consider that on a parking lot by parking lot basis,” Nickel said.
The parking lot is not the only big project the City of Marshalltown is undertaking this summer.
Work continues on East Merle Hibbs Road and a storm sewer project on Fourth Street. Nickel said construction has also been ongoing at the Marshalltown Regional Airport.
