LEXINGTON, Va. (WDBJ) - At its regular meeting Thursday night, Lexington City Council approved a system for the renaming of streets. The city had not had a formal method for street naming. A petition to rename a half dozen streets with names associated with the Confederacy raised the question for council.
The new procedure requires the involvement of residents along the street being named, and a final vote by city council. However, council can still act on its own to name or change the name of a street.
The decision came after several hearings that allowed public comment on the subject.
