TAMPA — Tampa police fired on but did not hit a man who pointed an air rifle at them on Wednesday, police said.
Two officers in a marked patrol vehicle heading south on North 22nd Street near East Hamilton Avenue about 10 p.m. encountered a man, later identified as 57-year-old Isaac Junior Denmark, walking in the middle of the street while holding what appeared to be a rifle, according to an arrest report.
Officers got out of the car and ordered Denmark to drop the gun. Instead, the report states, Denmark turned toward the officers, began to shoulder the scoped rifle and pointed it in the direction of the officers.
One of the officers fired at least one shot at Denmark. Denmark was not hit but dropped the rifle and was taken into custody, according to the report. No one was injured.
Police determined the weapon was a Crossman Legacy 1000 air rifle that shoots pellets, the report states.
Police have not released the name of the officers involved. The officer who wrote the report and a statement Denmark gave to police was among the information redacted from the report by a records custodian at the Hillsborough County jail.
Denmark was booked into jail on two counts of aggravated assault on a law enforcement officer with a deadly weapon. He was being held Thursday in lieu of $15,000 bail. Records describe him as “at large” and list his occupation as a self-employed yard worker.
