If the Near Southside has Magnolia Avenue, the River East district has Race Street — a burgeoning corridor showcasing a diverse array of locally owned businesses while continuing to attract more, from a craft brewery to a Latin seafood restaurant. With new business also comes new art, and on Saturday, the neighborhood will dedicate a mural featuring a World War II icon paying homage to the area's female entrepreneurs.
The "Rosie the Riveter" mural at 3009 Race St. will have a formal dedication ceremony as part of the area's monthly outdoor artisan vendor market, Race Street Rollick. The dedication will also feature a group of special guests — real-life "Rosies" and members of the Fort Worth Chapter of The American Rosie the Riveter Association, an organization founded in 1998 that honors the working women of World War II.
The mural was commissioned by the River East Neighborhood Association and completed in October by an artist who, according to River East, would prefer not to be named.
“We are extremely proud that female-owned businesses are such a big part of Race Street, and we are overjoyed that these amazing women who told the world ‘We Can Do It’ will attend the dedication of our mural," Cindy Crowder-Wheeler, owner of Tributary Cafe, said in a statement.
Race Street Rollick will take place from 11 a.m. – 5 p.m., and the mural dedication will take place at 1 p.m. More information about the event is available here.
