PHOENIX — Construction to repair the Seventh Street bridge that was damaged by a fire on Feb. 28 will start on Monday.
The structure suffered severe damage during the fire, with approximately 35% of the bridge needing to be removed and rebuilt, a City of Phoenix press release said.
The city is currently working on infrastructure that is placed at the bottom of the Salt River which will support the reconstruction efforts.
Traffic will be restricted on Seventh Street between Broadway Road and Interstate 17 during the construction project, the release said.
Drivers are encouraged to take Seventh Avenue or 16th Street as a detour while the project unfolds.
In addition, bus service will detour around the bridge, with bus route 7 being rerouted after the stop at Mohave Street and Broadway Road.
The Seventh Street trailhead is also temporarily closed and access to the trails under the bridge is restricted.
The trailheads at 17th Street and Central Avenue remain open, with hikers having the opportunity to walk west of 16th Street and east of Central Avenue, but required to turn around before approaching the bridge.
The bridge, which spans the Salt River, will be closed for six months, according to the release.
