SCFR: Cause of apartment fire on Gibson Street was misuse of kitchen range - KTIV

UPDATE

SIOUX CITY (KTIV) - Investigators said a fire that broke out shortly before 4:30 Thursday morning at an apartment complex on Gibson Street was caused by a misused kitchen range.

Seven engines and 23 firefighters were on scene to put out the fire.

Investigators say the kitchen range that started the fire in Building 700 at the Riverview Apartments on Gibson Street was being utilized as supplemental heat.

Sioux City Fire Rescue said eight apartments were damaged, affecting about 20 residents.

"This time of year December, January, February are the busiest times for fires throughout the season both locally and nationally. And one of the big reasons for that is heating fires. So, what we want to do is remind residents that you should not use your oven, range or stove as a source of supplemental heat," said Captain Ryan Collins, Deputy Fire Marshall.

Captain Ryan Collins said, if your interior conditions are cold, it's recommended to seal up windows and do your best to keep what heat you have inside your home.

Everyone got out safely… and Captain Collins said it's because of functioning smoke alarms.

"The fire was discovered because of a working smoke alarm. So, that working smoke alarm gave all the occupants inside that building enough time to safely evacuate. There were some that could not go out their main door, they had to go out their back door through their fire escape. Very, very important they knew what to do they acted accordingly and everybody was safe," said Captain Collins.

Captain Collins added the cold weather was a factor when fighting the fire.

"Weather always hampers our abilities to effectively work a structure fire but more particular is the wind. The wind-driven fires are very difficult they're a little more dangerous it causes erratic fire behavior inside the building. So, we always take those into account the wind and we adjust our tactics accordingly," said Captain Collins.

The Red Cross is helping those who were displaced in the fire.

Red Cross leaders said two volunteers were able to meet with the residents to offer them hotels, if they didn't already have somewhere else they could go.

Tammy Lee, Executive Director for the Northwest Iowa & Northeast Nebraska chapter of Red Cross, said they'll continue to work with those who were affected by the fire on a case by case basis.

"Some people do have resources. Some of the folks in this fire did have renters insurance. Some of them have some financial savings that they can fall back on or they have family that is in the community. And so, how long we are apart of their recovery really depends on the individual and what needs that they have," said Lee.

Lee said the apartment management company is looking at other properties to see if there are available apartments for those who were displaced.
