BIG RAPIDS — The city of Big Rapids was approved for a $171,000 grant to resurface a section of Maple Street next year.
The grant from the Michigan Department of Transportation, Transportation Economic Development Fund, will be used to resurface Maple Street from Third Avenue to Bronson.
“Most of Maple Street is MDOT right-of-way, and they are responsible for maintaining it,” City Manager Mark Gifford said. “After you go through the light at Third Ave, it turns into local jurisdiction. That is a vital corridor for business for the industrial park and is in need of improvement.”
The estimated cost for the project is nearly $215,000, which leaves a balance of around $44,000 to be covered by city funding.
“The city receives funding from the state for road maintenance and gets 1 mill in tax revenue for roads,” Gifford said. “The remainder will come out of those funding sources.”
The city commission approved a resolution authorizing the city to pursue the grant in April 2019, after receiving the engineering estimates for the cost of the project.
According to the engineering report sent to the city commission, there are 41 different businesses in the industrial zone that create high volumes of truck traffic on the Maple Street.
Maple Street is the city’s main trunk line into the industrial zone and has been worn down by heavy load capacities, the report said.
The project, which would include milling and filling, with 3-inch mill on 4-inch bituminous pavement, will address the wear and tear on the road from the truck traffic, and any major potholes along the corridor.
The work would run from Northland Drive East down Maple Street, northeast over the Maple Street bridge, and east down to the end of Maple Street, stopping at Bronson, and is expected to begin sometime in 2022.
The project will go out for public bid, and the contractor will determine the timing, Gifford said.
The work is expected to last week or two and there will be minor traffic interruptions throughout. The work schedule and any road closings will be communicated to the public when they are determined.
