HOUSTON – Two people were killed and another was critically injured during a street-racing incident in northwest Houston on Sunday, according to the Harris County Sheriff’s Office.
Deputies said one driver, 22-year-old Andrew Mock, has been charged with two counts of manslaughter and one count of aggravated assault-reckless driving with serious bodily injury. Deputies said charges could be upgraded.
Crews responded to the accident at 9:29 p.m. in the 14900 block of the Northwest Freeway near West Little York Road.
Deputies said Mock was driving a yellow 2018 Chevrolet Camaro westbound at a high rate of speed when he struck the left-rear of a black 2017 Chevrolet Malibu with the right-front of his Camaro. Deputies said the collision caused the Malibu to travel off of the roadway and onto a sidewalk, which was occupied by pedestrians. The Malibu struck several pedestrians who were standing on the sidewalk, deputies said.
One witnesses, Keaton Odorisio says it was over in an instant.
“There was honestly not too much we could do until paramedics to arrive, just our prayers go out to them and their families.”
Investigators said 35-year-old Roger Glover was killed in the incident. Glover’s family has set up a GoFundMe account to help pay for funeral expenses.
Deputies said two teen boys between the ages of 14 and 17 were taken to Memorial Hermann Hospital Downtown by Life Flight. On Monday morning, it was confirmed by HCSO that one of the teens died from his injuries. Deputies said the other teen remains in “very critical” condition.
Initially, officials said there was a car meet-up by K1 Speed Car earlier that Sunday where deputies were at the location working the event prior to the fatal accident. Investigators said they believe that once the event ended, people from the event were part of the crowd that was formed during the street-racing incident, officials said.
The crash remains under investigation by the Harris County Sheriff’s Office Vehicular Crimes Division.
Mock is charged with two counts of manslaughter and one count of reckless driving. He could be sentenced to more than 60 years in prison if convicted.
