Village of Attica: $50000 grant will help improve street safety - The Daily News Online

ATTICA — A $50,000 state grant is funding a series of safety improvements on village streets.

The Multi-Modal Safety Grant was secured with the help of Assemblyman David DiPietro, R-East Aurora, said Mayor Nathan Montford. The funding will cover all the expenses involved.

The project’s planners have worked to keep costs down — village Department of Public Works personnel will install the equipment themselves, in conjunction with Attica Central School staff where needed.

“Everything has been ordered, and as soon as it arrives, weather permitting of course, we will get right on installation,” Montford said.

The work will specifically include: n Solar LED rapid flashing beacons with push buttons will be installed at several pedestrian crosswalks.

Locations will include Main Street at North/South Pearl Street; Main and Market streets; and the crosswalk at Veterans Park and the AYA field on Exchange Street.

The units will be compliant with the Americans with Disabilities Act.

n Several digital speed limit signs featuring driver feedback will be installed in the village. Besides listing the speed limit, they will display how fast drivers are traveling.

Similar units are in use in the Village of Perry.

Locations will include Route 238 and Main Street near Attica High School, along with Prospect Street and North Street near Attica Elementary School.

n A portable Black Cat II radar recorder device used to collect data on traffic, as well as speeds throughout the day at any location necessary.

n A traffic camera and internet server will be installed at Main and Market streets.

Montford said the village is pleased and appreciative for the help DiPietro gave regarding the project and funding.

Besides DiPietro, Montford also thanked Village Administrator Doug Post, Chief Dean Hendershot of the Attica Police, DPW Supervisor Craig Kazmierzak, David Barber and Attica Central School for their efforts in making the project a reality.
