A portion of 55th Street in Boulder will be closed this weekend while BNSF Railway installs the infrastructure for a quiet zone at the railroad crossing there.
According to the city, quiet zones address the impact of train horn noise on surrounding neighborhoods and businesses through physical infrastructure that allows train engineers to pass through railroad crossings without needing to sound train horns. However, engineers still have the authority to sound the horn if unsafe conditions exist.
The street will be closed between Central and Western avenues from 7 a.m. to 5 p.m. Jan. 23 and 24. Through-traffic will be detoured to Arapahoe Avenue and Pearl/Walnut streets, according to Boulder cone zones. RTD route 208 will be detoured, and pedestrian sidewalk access will be maintained.
Funding for the project, which included work at the Pearl Parkway crossing earlier this month, comes from a $1 million Denver Regional Council of Governments grant with a $200,000 match from Boulder’s transportation fund.
Roadway improvements will be managed by Boulder, and railroad improvements will be managed by BNSF Railway.
