BROOKLYN, Ohio -- Brooklyn for the third consecutive year plans on spending more than $1.1 million in asphalt projects for city streets.
Brooklyn’s estimated $1,105,000 street construction list includes Winter Lane, Memphis Villas South, Brookport Drive, Summer Lane, Montgomery Place and West 74th Street.
Construction -- asphalt overlays and full-depth repairs as needed -- is scheduled to start in the spring with a fall completion date. Brooklyn Mayor Katie Gallagher said city engineer GPD Group rates the streets.
“We try to be consistent and in the same area,” Gallagher said. “We think about mobilization when we hire a contractor because obviously when you’re doing construction it impacts residents in the area. With the exception of Winter Lane and Memphis Villas, which are right next to each other, this year it’s kind of all over the place.
“Brookport, Summer and Montgomery Place are small areas throughout the city and then W. 174th is something we realized that had not been included in our street list because it was an alley. We’re making sure we’re not missing anything, especially those streets that have deteriorated.”
Brooklyn Director of Public Service John Verba said he expects the project bid opening to take place next month.
The mayor noted Brooklyn annually earmarks between $1 million and $1.2 million for road repairs.
“We have cost estimates for each street, so in particular this year Winter Lane is the most expensive at $350,000,” said Gallagher, who noted in 2023 the city expects to spend more than $2 million on road repairs.
The increase is tied to the city’s $780,000 contribution towards the Brookpark Road repaving project.
“We know that’s coming up, which explains why we have five-year capital plans,” Gallagher said.
While 2021 finds Cuyahoga County widening the Memphis Avenue bridge to Tiedeman Road, which also includes a dedicated turn lane south to Tiedeman Road, next year is the major Northeast Ohio Areawide Coordinating Agency (NOACA) Ridge Road repaving from Memphis Avenue north.
“Starting in 2023, our streets should all be rated above fair,” Gallagher said. “We’ve done a lot of work to make sure we have quality streets. We’ve come a long way.”
