AYER – The Office for Community & Economic Development is continuing its efforts to revamp vital sections of Ayer and is looking for financial assistance from the state.
Alan Manoian, the office’s director, said he submitted a Housing Choice Capital Grant application to state officials on Dec. 11. Manoian said the office is looking for $108,000 for a capital project to fund an engineering survey, design plan, cost estimate and schedule for infrastructure improvements on Park Street.
The state’s Housing Choice Capital Program Grant Program provides funding for projects that have some kind of connection to housing, a town’s housing production record and its sustainable growth policies. The town should also have earned Housing Choice Designation, meaning the state recognizes the community as one with policies and production targets meant to encourage growth.
“It’s going to be another hot year for good, sustainable development in Ayer,” Manoian said.
According to the Ayer Office’s application, Park Street is in need of better roadway infrastructure to be able to withstand future affordable housing units. To establish that infrastructure, Park Street needs a sidewalk network compliant with the Americans with Disabilities Act, on-street parking, crosswalks, lighting, sidewalk trees, reduction of curb-cuts and re-location of obsolete utility poles that obstruct the movement of pedestrians. The office believes the infrastructure work will expand housing choices, promote clean energy, provide better transportation options and future job opportunities.
If the application is approved, it would be the second major infrastructure project Ayer would earn state funding. Back in November, the town received a $3.1 million MassWorks grant from the Massachusetts Executive Office of Housing & Economic Development to fund infrastructure projects on West Main Street. The idea being a revitalization of the area to develop housing opportunities, improve water flow and be an attractive gateway into Devens.
