PORTAGE, MI -- The city of Portage expressed the community’s gratitude to Pfizer with a street mural painted outside the facility where the highly awaited COVID-19 vaccine was created.
The street mural reads “Thank you Pfizer!” and was painted along Portage Road in front of the Pfizer Global Supply campus, according to a press release from the city of Portage.
“I thank all of the Pfizer employees for the dedication they have put in to creating a vaccine in record time and those who supported these efforts,” City Manager Joe La Margo said. “Portage is enormously proud of what our friends and neighbors have accomplished. History has been made right here in Portage.”
The COVID-19 vaccine left in trucks from the Pfizer plant in Portage on Dec. 13, prompting celebration across the country as the first healthcare workers received vaccinations against the coronavirus.
Pfizer and German pharmaceutical company BioNTech worked together with the goal of producing up to 50 million vaccine doses globally in 2020, and expects to produce up to 1.3 billion additional doses in 2021.
First on the list of those to be vaccinated are frontline healthcare workers. Bronson Methodist Hospital in Kalamazoo hopes to vaccinate the general public by summer 2021.
Trans American Striping, a Portage city vendor, donated the work of painting the mural. In addition to the street mural, the city of Portage also installed “Thank You” banners at various locations around the city. A group of Portage residents produced yard sings for distribution throughout the Portage community as well.
Residents wanting to display a yard sign can pick one up at Portage City Hall, from the lower-level delivery door, while supplies last. Signs should be installed on private property and not in the city right-of-way.
