JACKSONVILLE, Fla. – Two people were killed in a crash Sunday afternoon on the Main Street Bridge, the Jacksonville Sheriff’s Office said.
The crash, which happened around 1 p.m., closed both directions of the downtown bridge for more than 3 ½ hours. Police announced at 4:40 p.m. that the bridge had reopened.
According to police, a woman was driving north over the bridge when her vehicle crossed into the southbound lanes and struck a vehicle driven by a man.
The woman died at the scene and the man was taken to a hospital, where he died, police said.
It appeared the crash involved a black vehicle and a white vehicle that a Geico logo on it. Police said the man was driving the black vehicle and the woman was driving the white vehicle. News4Jax has reached out to Geico for a statement.
According to the Sheriff’s Office, there were no passengers in either vehicle.
The Sheriff’s Office said there were witnesses on scene who talked with police. Traffic homicide detectives are investigating.
