Work is continuing on 291 Livingston Street, a 22-story, 100-room hotel building in Downtown Brooklyn. The 189-foot-tall project is designed by Gene Kaufman Architect and is being developed by Aview Equities and Hello Living, which purchased the plot for $11.1 million. The property is located between Nevins Street to the east and Hanover Place to the west, and is planned to contain a ground-floor beer garden.
Recent photos show 291 Livingston Street still fully shrouded in a thick assembly of black netting, metal scaffolding, and long wooden boards, much the same as it was when we last visited in late July. Due to the density of this assembly, the state of progress on the structure’s façade is unclear. The exterior elevator hoist is still attached to the northern back side of the tower, where we can also see a pair of cantilevering platforms on the top levels. These could be terraces for select hotel rooms.
Renderings depict the building clad in black brick with large windows, and corner terraces with rounded columns. The most intriguing design aspect, however, is the black-and-white dazzle-patterned mural on the western face. The dizzying array of stripes are asymmetrically arranged across the two windowless surfaces above the adjacent corner low-rise structure, as well as the mechanical extension on the very top of the building. It remains to be seen if this striking feature makes it into the actual design.
Based on the inability to accurately track the progress of work on 291 Livingston Street, it’s unclear when the building will finish construction and open to the public. At this point, it’s safe to assume it will be well into 2021.
