A cheering crowd of several hundred people spontaneously lined both sides of Main Street in Northampton Saturday afternoon to celebrate the new President of the United States after the Associated Press declared Joe Biden the winner of the 2020 presidential race and Kamala Harris as the first female, black and South Asian Vice President.
The Associated Press declared the 2020 presidential race finished at about 11:30 a.m. Saturday when it determined incumbent president Donald Trump could not make up his vote shortfall in Pennsylvania, giving Biden 20 Electoral College votes and putting him over the 270 needed to win.
At times it appeared to be as much a drive-by demonstration as strings of cars slowly passed throngs of revelers on the street with blowing horns and passengers waving signs and shouting out the windows.
Kristina Benson stood near the intersection of Main and King streets, waving a multi-colored diversity flag and said she drove from Holyoke to be part of the celebration she felt was an affirmation of human rights.
“I’m here to support all those whose rights are manifested in this moment in history,” she said. “I am so happy that our rights have been validated.”
Signs, flags and banners were everywhere promoting all aspects of the moment - the Biden – Harris ticket, science in government and just happiness in general, or as in Benson’s case , diversity. The good ol' American red, white and blue waved alongside peace symbol flags.
Jody Doele, co-owner and manager of Thorne’s Market, stood on a traffic island in the middle of Main Street wearing a red, white and blue Uncle Sam hat and directing traffic around her with a smaller stars and stripes. She said the Trump administration has taken the joy out of the last four years.
“I haven’t been this happy in a long time,” she said. “We have the first women in the White House. It has been such a long time since we had anything to celebrate and that is why I am out here.”
Not everyone was out for the sheer jubilation of the moment. Andrew Kilduff held a sign not unlike one that would have been seen at a Trump rally – “Lock him up.” He said he wasn’t trying to be vindictive in the midst of the gaiety.
“I try to call it for what it is,” he said. “I nothing happens to him after all he did then someone far more sinister and cunning will come along and replace him.”
Ray Saarinen, from San Antonio, Texas, waved a sign hailing , “Madam Vice President.”
“I am here for the collective joy and relief,” she said, when asked why she came to the demonstration. “This is the first time in a long time I haven’t taken to the streets without accusing someone of murder.”
