At least 14 people were arrested and 16 vehicles were impounded Sunday night after hundreds of cars blocked intersections, bridges and freeways in Portland, police said, in the second large-scale street racing event in the city in as many days.
Officers responded about 8 p.m. to reports of up to 400 vehicles near Northeast Airport Way and 122nd Avenue. Police attempted to break up the gathering, conducting traffic stops and forcing the crowd to move to different parts of the city.
At points throughout the evening, street racers briefly took over the top deck of the Fremont Bridge, the Interstate Bridge, the Sunset Tunnel on Oregon 26 and multiple intersections, mostly in North and Northeast Portland.
Sunday night’s events came a day after a similar group took over the intersection of Northeast 15th Street and Killingsworth Avenue, prompting hundreds of calls to 911, before moving to another location in North Portland where they reportedly spun circles for more than an hour uninterrupted.
Portland has a long, and deadly, history with drivers shutting down freeways, highways or neighborhood streets to drive their cars in circles, creating noise and putting bystanders in danger.
On Sunday, police said they have seen a shift in street racing events, with participants blocking streets and some people in the crowd throwing objects at arriving officers.
