NORTH CENTER — A contraflow bike lane was installed Wednesday in North Center for cyclists traveling west in the neighborhood.
The new bike lane runs east along a short, one-way stretch of Grace Street between Lincoln and Damen avenues.
Contraflow bike lanes help convert a one-way street to a two-way street. The new bike lane going west will be for bikes only, while cyclists and motorists can share the road to travel east on Grace.
Crews were outside installing the new bike lane Wednesday, according to a tweet from Ald. Matt Martin (47th).
Cyclists heading west on Grace will now have a dedicated bike lane while traveling through the one-way stretch. Grace has two-way traffic west of Damen and east of Lincoln.
“This lane, together with new bike traffic signals, will make it safer for cyclists using Grace in both directions,” Martin said.
