GRAND RAPIDS, MI -- A heavy downpour caused street flooding and downed trees and wires in Grand Rapids.
Sections of some roads were reported to have standing water at one point, including westbound I-196 under Diamond Avenue. A crash was reported on the freeway, east of College Avenue and in the same general area, about the same time as the flooding.
Alpine Avenue NW under a railroad bridge also had flooding.
The problems began about 6:15 p.m. Thursday, July 9 as heavy rain fell.
Grand Rapids firefighters responded at about 7:05 p.m. to a report of a partial roof collapse at a structure in the 100 block of Garden Street SE. There were no immediate reports of injuries.
A Consumers Energy outage map also showed about 9,000 customers in Kent County without electricity as of 7:30 p.m.
Those areas included a large area in Jenison and two areas in Grand Rapids -- one north of Lake Michigan Drive and the other along East Fulton Street near Maryland Avenue.
