JULY 2 UPDATE
If you’re heading to the beach and plan to drive through Morehead City you might run into a major traffic nightmare.
Arendell Street, which is also U.S. 70, is closed to all westbound traffic after part of the roadway collapsed and a water main broke at the intersection with 5th Street.
Crews worked several hours to stop the leak but still have to repair the road.
If you are on U.S. 70 driving to Beaufort, and points east, you will run into delays.
One motorist, Donald Fader, says, “You just need to slow down, a lot of people are from out of town. Give them room, they aren’t really trying to cut you off, they just need to get in that left-hand lane. Back off and let them in. Everybody’s here to have a good time and there’s no reason to get all upset about the traffic and not enjoy yourself”
The D.O.T. says the street is expected to reopen sometime Friday.
Morehead City is telling people to avoid the area.
