Broadway got some new street art Friday. Artists worked from Thursday evening through the next day painting “Black Lives Matter, remember this time” on the section of the street between Colfax and 14th Avenues.
Artist Adri Norris painted the BLM statement in black paint, then had artists and volunteers use white paint to mark the letters with their hands and foot prints to “make their mark on how whiteness has encroached on their personhoods,” she said.
Dan Taylor used the white paint to make footprints in the black letters. “That represents where the colonizers or the white man has stepped on the colored people and indigenous people of different places.”
“Remember this time” was painted beneath the BLM statement “because we have done this before and it has gone un-listened-to, un-repeated,” Norris said.
The city also replaced the Broadway street sign with one that reads “Black Lives Matter Boulevard.”
