Bay City’s Adams Street becomes family friendly hangout with new seating areas, outdoor games - MLive.com

BAY CITY, MI - Numerous outdoor patios and seating areas have popped up on some streets in downtown Bay City after the city recently launched its “Feet on the Street” program.

The Feet on the Street is a program that closes selected streets to traffic so that businesses can host sidewalk cafes to give them an economic boost after the COVID-19 shutdowns. The program was started when the City Commission approved two traffic control orders on June 1, which included one for the Downtown Business District.

Feet on the Street allows businesses to expand their seating areas outdoors into selected streets, which has been a positive boost to area restaurants that are still limited to a 50% seating capacity to help mitigate the spread of COVID-19.

Included in the downtown traffic control order is Adams Street at Center Avenue, toward Fifth Street. City Market at 401 Center Ave. has been taking advantage of the closure by providing a playful and family oriented atmosphere outside.

“Bring the family for a day of fun and celebration while supporting your favorite local small businesses,” said a statement from City Market.

City Market has set up numerous tables and chairs for outdoor seating, some partitioned off by flower planters and wooden dividers, while also offering family games and activities such as cornhole, giant Jenga and sidewalk chalk.

Customers are able to grab a snack, drink or full meal from one of the area restaurants and stop outside to enjoy the new patio setup.

The Public House, which sits across the street from City Market at 811 Adams St. is also jumping into the outdoor sidewalk cafe game. The Public House is creating lounge seating space into Adams Street, with European beer hall tables for brunch on weekends, said Public House owner Lyndsay Edmonds.

City Market reopened for regular market hours of 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. Tuesday through Friday and 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Saturday. There are currently 20 small businesses located inside City Market including shops and restaurants offering fresh produce, handcrafted coffee and tea drinks, homemade desserts, specialty BBQ, pizza, authentic mexican food, olive and cheese bar, speciality grocery items, homeopathic items and more.

City Market is also participating with food assistance programs including SNAP/EBT, Double Up Food Bucks, WIC Project Fresh and Senior Project Fresh.

Other streets included in the Feet on the Street Program are Third Street between Saginaw and Water; portions of Saginaw Street and Center Avenue, and the two-block roadway between Catherine and Henry streets and Henry and Linn streets in the Midland Street Business District.
