Construction is approaching street level at 450 Eleventh Avenue in Hudson Yards, site of a 487-foot-tall, 531-room hotel. A good deal of progress has occurred since site YIMBY’s update last October, when excavation was just wrapping up and the foundations walls were still being formed. Designed by DSM Design Group, developed by Marx Development Group, and due to operate under Starwood Hotels & Resorts Worldwide, 450 Eleventh Avenue is located between West 36th and 37th Streets, directly across from the Jacob K. Javits Center.
Photos from around the site show preparations underway for the ground-floor slab. Crews are setting up the temporary supports that will hold up the formwork, rebar, and poured concrete. It appears that the foundation walls are complete.
The rendering posted on the construction fence shows a wavy set of glass boxes stacked in rows of three, and placed atop one another with an asymmetrical profile on each side. Each volume has its own orientation of angled edges of the glass curtain wall, and thus creates sharp jagged corners between each exterior component. The design ultimately culminates with a flat roof parapet. The architecture and visual aspect of the edifice will certainly set it apart from the orderly geometry and massing of the Jacob K. Javits Center, as well as the rest of the relatively orthodox glass skyscrapers in the neighborhood. Though it comes up short of skyscraper status, its lively design will make it stand out. It will be interesting to see how the light from the sunsets over the Hudson River will play off the building’s dynamic façade.
450 Eleventh Avenue is slated to be finished in the fall of 2022.
