SAN JOSE — An incendiary device was thrown on a residential street corner in San Jose and started a small fire Sunday night, authorities said.
Just before 9 p.m., San Jose Fire Department responded to reports of a fire on the 1000 block of East San Fernando Street, spokesperson Erica Ray said Tuesday morning.
A person had thrown “a glass full of something” on the street, the caller told police, which then ignited the flames. There were no reported injuries.
The fire was already out by the time fire personnel arrived, but they quickly deemed it suspicious, Ray said. It was not immediately clear where the thrower was aiming or what motivated the incident.
Roosevelt Park Neighborhood Association board member Jeff Levine, who lives about two blocks away, captured the moment the flame ignited from his home security camera.
A man on a bicycle threw the object toward a house, Levine said, but it landed near a metal fence instead. The homeowner — along with others along the street — were left feeling rattled, he said.
“This is a clear case of someone throwing basically a lit Molotov cocktail at a house,” Levine said. “It’s far worse than someone just tossing a firecracker.”
The San Jose Fire Department’s arson unit is now investigating, Ray said.
